MEASURING FOR NEW SAILS FROM PRECISION SAILS & DIY FULE POLISHER- 12/19/21

One of our big projects, well your could argue our biggest project for the winter was to get new sails. As soon as we got to Gosport we started researching companies, talking with sail makers for the best set-up, and getting quotes. For obvious reasons, new sails are such a big deal and we wanted to take our time finding a company we felt comfortable working with. When we got in contact with Precision Sails in Canada we got excited because a few of our other sailing channel friends have used them and have been very happy with the results. Since new sails is a big decision we felt really good going with a company that we could trust.

This week was all about measuring. We are getting a furling main sail and two headsails. We wanted a down-wind set-up that would be easy for just the two of us (i.e. newbie me, Ava) to handle. The plan is to have two headsails that will be pulled all the way out.

Measuring for the sails is fairly straight forward. Precision has measuring forms that are laid-out well and are easy to follow. First, we pulled down the head sail, took it up to the parking lot, measured, and filled in the form. As we were doing that, Mads and I were saying that we have watched so many other sailing channels doing this same process to measure for sails, it felt nice that we were finally able to do it. We went back to Athena, took some measurements on the boat, and filled in the rest of the form. We did the exact same process for the mail sail. We submitted our measurements to Precision and next we will sit down over video call with the team as discuss sail design.

The winter is going by quickly, as we knew it would. It is such a relief to have finally started the process of getting out new sails. A relief and extremely exciting. Getting this task checked off our list means we are one step closer to getting Athena ready to cross the Atlantic.
